Ammonites are a fossilized mollusk, similar to their current-day cousins, the nautilus. They date to the Cretaceous Period, and are around 102-108 million years old. The chambers in their shell gave them buoyancy. They belong to the cephalopod subclass Ammonoidea. I love the variegated color of this little fossil.
