Ammolite is found in shale beds in Alberta, Canada. Ammonites were deposited and fossilized in layers in the shale, and crushed, leaving their beautiful nacre behind. It is a fragile stone, and Ammolite cabochons are either capped with quartz, like an opal doublet, or covered with an epoxy to stabilize the surface. Ammolite comes in many colors, and the beautiful colors are often directional. This piece is glazed with an epoxy to stabilize the stone.
